Examining Ourselves

Thanks again for taking the time to read this! In my devotions, I came across this study, and it was a great reminder to me:
Examine yourselves to see if your faith is genuine. Test yourselves. Surely you know that Jesus Christ is among you; if not, you have failed the test of genuine faith.
— 2 Corinthians 13:5
When the Corinthians criticize Paul and his authority, he turns the tables on them. He tells the church they should examine THEIR hearts to see if they are really born again and members of the body of Christ.
HERE ARE A FEW EXAMPLES OF QUESTIONS YOU CAN APPLY  TO "EXAMINE YOURSELF"
  • Are you growing in holiness? Becoming more like Jesus? (Jas 2:14–26)
  • Does the Holy Spirit live in your heart, or are you living to gratify the desires of the flesh?
    (Ro 8:5–9)
  • Is there evidence in your life that you love other believers? Other people? (1 Jn 3:14)
  • Do you continue to be trapped in unrepentant sin? (1 Co 6:9; 1 Jn 3:9)
  • Are you committed to doing what God says is right? (1 Jn 2:29)
  • Do you keep God’s commandments? (1 Jn 2:3–6)

Remember that living righteously, does not mean living a perfect, sin-free life. As John MacArthur explains, “Being righteous doesn’t mean you never sin; it means you confess your sin to the Lord, repent of it, and despise it.”

So when you are spending some time in prayer this week, be sure to take time to examine yourself!

Have a great week!
